"Killing Angela"

These are the world premiere performances of "Killing Angela", a 2013 piece written by Chicago playwright Vincent Truman.

At 15, Angela Pierce was kidnapped from her home. Enduring over half a year in captivity, she escapes only to find the world has moved on without her, and has, in her absence, made her a celebrity martyr: her mother has found success as an author of a book about grief, laws have been passed, her high school football team has been renamed for her, etc. So she leaves town to destination unknown. The world doesn't notice - except for the detective who was originally on the case, John Fowler, who has been thrown off the force for not giving up the search. Working on his own for two years, he finally locates Angela, who has adopted a new identity and new life in a new state. When Fowler asks Angela to return with him, that's when the guns come out. What follows is a bloody chess game of shifting identities and motivations that impact Angela's husband, Theo, his friend, Charlie, local police officer Sarah Vollmer and even Fowler's former partner, Loretta Runer.

This play examines how life's circumstances are the biggest advocates in defining who we are. And how other people, and sometimes ourselves, become collateral damage towards that end.
