Book Launch: "Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America" by Jeff Chu
Arts at Old First is proud to host the book launch of award winning journalist Jeff Chu's debut work "Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America".

This multi-media event will include readings and discussion by author Jeff Chu with designer Andrae Gonzalo of Project Runway, musical interludes by Grammy-nominated Jennifer Knapp, the photography of Dana Halferty, and audience Q&A. Moderated by Rev. Dr. Daniel Meeter, pastor of Old First Reformed Church.

"Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America" recounts Chu's travels around the United States as he and other Christians  gay, straight, or in between  come to terms with a religion that preaches love for all but so often practices intolerance against their sexual orientation. Raised in a strict Baptist family, journalist Jeff Chu made a remarkable yearlong cross-country pilgrimage in search of answers to the question in the book's title. He visited 28 states and interviewed more than 300 people: bishops and pastors, Sunday-school teachers and average Joes and Janes, straight and gay, devout and atheist. He went to churches ranging from nondenominational to Episcopal, mega to tiny. What he found was a deeply divided church, well-meaning but confused, especially over how to define the word "love".

Jennifer Knapp and Andrae Gonzalo are among the real-life characters who appear in Does Jesus Really Love Me?. Both will talk with Chu about their shared experience, and Knapp will add her acclaimed folk rock music to this rich event. Chu's pilgrimage also included conversations with members of the infamous Westboro Church; Dana Halferty's photography from Westboro will illuminate Chu's reading from the book about the encounter.
