Spring Large Ensemble Show
Directed by Betsy Ko, the Band will perform El Capitan by John Philip Sousa, Sun Dance by Frank Ticheli and Toccata by Frank Erickson. Along with Stars and Stripes Forever, El Capitan is one of Sousa's better known marches, but few are also aware that this music was originally part of a Sousa operetta with a comical plot of political intrigue and mistaken identities. Frank Ticheli, the composer of our second work, is acknowledged by many to be one of the best living American composers writing for band today. In Sun Dance, Ticheli envisions "a town festival on a warm, sunwashed day...with townspeople gathered in the park, some in small groups, some walking hand in hand, others dancing to the music of a small band under a red gazebo." Finally, with Toccata, we continue our exploration of this great American composer, Himself a trumpeter, Erickson gives our trumpet section a chance to shine during several passages in this popular work.
