The Verdi Chorus presents "Kings, Queens and Celebrations"
The Verdi Chorus takes immense pride in the announcement of its 30th Anniversary Concerts on Saturday, April 20th and Sunday, April 21st. Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum has fashioned a grand entertainment to pay homage to this singular celebration in the Chorus' history.
An opulent trio of soloists has been assembled to ensure a truly gala event led by the return of soprano Suzan Hanson. Fresh from her triumph with the Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theater in the role of Madeline in Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher (where she was lauded by the Hollywood Reporter for both her "vocal power and sinuous physicality,") Ms. Hanson continues to explore the traditional operatic repertoire of Puccini and Verdi side by side with the works of contemporaries Michael Nyman and John Adams as a testament to her convictions as a singing actress. We look forward with anticipation to her forays into both Verdi's Lady Macbeth and Abigaille from Nabucco, which promise to be goose bump inducing.
Our debuting tenor Raúl Hernández is hailed around the world as a bel canto specialist, having already sung the Duke in Rigoletto at the Metropolitan and New York City Operas. He's also a favorite with Glimmerglass Opera, and his beautiful lyric voice has been heard in Dresden, Madrid, Turin and his native Mexico at the recent '"Festival del Centro Historico" as Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Fans of the Verdi Chorus will certainly remember baritone Roberto Perlas Gómez from the finale of our Fall 2011 performance when he literally brought our audience to their feet singing the famous "Toreador Song" from Bizet's Carmen. We are grateful to welcome him back after his recent appearances with the Long Beach Opera and in Italy at the Arena di Verona. His rich voice will perfectly serve Verdi's demanding music in this concert. The chorus will be presenting excerpts and arias from Verdi's Nabucco and Macbeth, the final scene of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, and pieces from Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus.
As always, we are grateful for the contribution of our magnificent accompanist, Laraine Ann Madden, and are especially proud to be saluting our own Walter Fox Singers and section leaders in this concert who are the musical backbone of our group.
Priority seating is available for $40, general admission is $30, seniors are $25, and students 25 and under with a Valid ID are $10. Tickets can be purchased through the link on our website's homepage at www.verdichorus.org.
Please join us at First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica, 1008 11th Street at 7:30pm on Saturday, April 20th or 4pm Sunday, April 21st for what promises to be a magnificent musical event, and help us celebrate this important milestone in the history of the Verdi Chorus.
