THEY'RE OUR AIRWAVES. IT'S YOUR VISION.
On October 15th , 2013, the Federal Communications Commission will open an application window for thousands of Low Power FM radio frequencies (LPFM) across the United States. This window represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shift our media landscape on both a local and national level. With their minimal operating costs and neighborhood-oriented broadcast range, LPFMs can quickly become local cultural hubs, provide hands-on media training and employment, and help reinforce the fact that our airwaves are designed to serve the public good.
THE BROWN PAPER TICKETS NATIONAL "MAKE RADIO CHALLENGE"
We're challenging communities around the nation to fill every potential Low Power FM radio frequency with a qualified applicant. This may be the last opportunity to apply for an urban LPFM. We're taking the challenge in our hometown of Seattle, where we are organizing applicants to make 8 potential new radio stations strong and sustainable.
Brunch will be followed by a panel featuring local and national media policy advocates and music industry professionals, including:
Michael Bracy, Policy Director, Future of Music Coalition
Garlin Gilchrist II, National Campaign Director, MoveOn.org
Alissa McCain, Program Manager, Austin Creative Alliance
Billy Geoghegan, Brown Paper Tickets Doer, specializing in music
Hollis Wong-Wear, Singer in The Flavr Blue and Hidmo Seattle
Sabrina Roach, Brown Paper Tickets Doer, specializing in public interest media and director of the "Make Radio Challenge"
Topics will include:
*How LPFM can help foster arts and culture communities in Austin and beyond, close the gap on the low number of media outlets owned by people of color and women, partner with neighborhood blogs and other forms of local media to develop sustainable business models, and help train and provide networking for the next generation of media professionals.
*Assessing infrastructure in your area and identifying sources of funding
They're our airwaves. What's your dream?
