Take Your Best Shot: A Workshop for Novice Photographers
The Watkins Mill Association, in partnership with the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site presents:

Take Your Best Shot: A Workshop for Novice Photographers
Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site
March 23
1:00-4:00 p.m.
$45

Instructor Marty Williams will cover the basics  ISO, shutter speed and aperture  and settings that allow for more creative expression. The class includes instruction time, tours of the house and mill for picture taking, and a slideshow of participants' images created during the workshop.

Since 2005, Marty Williams has taught basic and advanced photography through the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Blue Springs School District, Kansas City Parks and Recreation and Missouri Extension Master Gardeners.
Since its inception in 1958, the Watkins Mill Association has supported the historic site's preservation and restoration projects and living history programs to help visitors connect to the past.

This year, Watkins Mill Association and Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site will co-sponsor a series of creative workshops  on writing, painting, sculpture, Victorian life, genealogy, and more  designed to help today's families relate to some 19th century experiences and activities in a relevant way.
The historic site's archives hold hundreds of photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Photography became accessible to the masses in the late 1800s with the invention of the dry plate technique, which used a glass negative plate with a dried gelatin emulsion. Dry plates could be stored for a period of time and they absorbed light quickly, making the hand-held camera possible.

Then in 1889, George Eastman invented a film base that was flexible, unbreakable, and could be rolled. His creation made the mass-produced box camera a reality.
Today, photography has been reborn through digital cameras and smart phone apps which make it possible for people of all ages and all walks of life to express their creativity and document their lives.

Watkins Mill Association is the official friends group of the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site and has donated an estimated $700,000 to the site for repair and restoration as well as living history and interpretation programs.
