Girls Inc. of the Island City: Women Who Dare Awards Event
The Women Who Dare Awards Event is Girls Inc. of the Island City's major signature event of the year.
This year's event will be on Saturday, May, 3, 2008, at Scott's Seafood Restaurant Pavilion in Oakland's Jack London Square.
At the event we will give awards to six outstanding women and teens who represent excellence and who are great role models for our girls.
This year's theme is "Women in Power" and we will honor the following six powerful Bay Area women and teens: Alice Lai-Bitker: Alameda County Supervisor, District 3
Maya Harris: Executive Director, ACLU of Northern California
Christi Hegranes: President & Founder, Press Institute for Women in the Developing World Misha Gonzalez: Alameda High School, Alameda
Leilani Hopson: Far West High School, Oakland
Madeline Ing: George Washington High School, San Francisco
In April, girls from our center go through our award-winning Best Foot Forward program - a month of workshops on interviewing, script writing, presentation, and etiquette - to prepare for the event. They will meet our awardees, prepare scripts, and will be the co-hosts who present the awards that day.
Janelle Wang, co-host of the popular San Francisco television show The View from the Bay, will be our emcee.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $30 a person, plus handling/credit card fees.
Prize drawing tickets for our fabulous give-away drawing are $10 each/3 for $25 and are available by e-mailing kbutler@girlsincislandcity.org, and will also be available the day of the event.
