Recognizing the importance of breaking barriers of fear and misunderstanding, ASWAT Ensemble was founded in January 2000 by Nabila Mango, a Palestinian American dedicated to community work. ASWAT (Arabic for "voices") is the first and only Bay Area Arab community music ensemble of 16 musicians and 20 singers of diverse backgrounds. ASWAT has been successful in creating a space of celebration of Arabic music in the Bay area..ASWAT promotes cross-cultural understanding and appreciation through preserving, promoting and playing Arabic classical and folk music from the Arab World. By celebrating a rich musical heritage,, ASWAT members have struck a resonant chord with a wide array of community members. ASWAT also appeals to peers in the professional music scene and a broader non-Arab audience with an affinity for Arab culture.
