Layali Zaman
Recognizing  the importance of breaking barriers of fear and misunderstanding, ASWAT Ensemble was founded in January 2000 by Nabila Mango, a Palestinian American dedicated to community work.
ASWAT (Arabic for "voices") is  the first and only Bay Area Arab  community music ensemble of 16 musicians and 20 singers of diverse backgrounds.  ASWAT has been successful in creating a space of  celebration of Arabic music in the Bay area..ASWAT promotes cross-cultural understanding  and appreciation through  preserving, promoting and playing Arabic classical and folk music from the Arab World.
By celebrating a rich musical heritage,, ASWAT members have struck a resonant chord with a wide array of community members. ASWAT also appeals to peers in the professional music scene and a broader non-Arab audience with an affinity for Arab culture.

In this Summer concert we present Egyptian Singer Gamal Gomaa, with special appearance by Syrian Singer Abboud Bashir. And Egyptian American Vocalist, Samara.

Abboud Bashir
Abboud descends from the rich and ancient music tradition of Aleppo, Syria. He started his music instruction with a Khoja, a female Quran recitation teacher, and then moved to study with some of the most famous and respected Syrian traditional singers. This was crowned with winning the 1984 Syrian singing competition, after which he toured many countries giving very impressive concerts of Muwashahat and Mawwal - the art of vocal improvisation and classical poetry singing. He became a favorite of the Bay Area since his appearance last year.

Gamal Gomaa
Gamal has started his long journey with Arabic music in his home town of Giza, Egypt at the age of 8. After studying few years, he quickly proved his talents and began his music career playing Percussion with several groups in Giza and Cairo. Soon he became a Tabla master and a singer playing with famous Belly Dancers and bands in Egypt and New York. He has three albums out, and can be reached at his website www.gamalg.com.

The artistic director of Aswat is Wael Kakish, a classically trained musician from Jordan who has taught Arabic music classes at universities and art centers throughout southern California.  Mr.Kakish is co-founder of Kan Zaman Community Ensemble in Los Angeles.
