Giuseppe Verdi's UN BALLO IN MASCHERA 03/17 - TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR, JOIN US!
This venue only: Pre Opera Talk!

Pre-opera presentation by Dr. Chris Pastore

University of Pennsylvania Professor Chris Pastore presents his perspectives on early opera and its relationship to later opera trends, especially as they relate to Un ballo in maschera and its composer, Giuseppe Verdi.

Opera means excitement and drama, beauty and emotion. We all relish the music, the stories and the performance but the pleasure an opera by Verdi delivers the audience today often misses the sharp and subtle frisson his works inspired when they debuted. Indeed, in turbulent times Verdi's masterpieces were vehicles for political messages and his art was central to the debate about Italian identity and statehood in an age of dissolution and unification. Before enjoying his Un ballo in maschera, we will talk about the political and social undercurrents that drove the development of the opera form from its earliest days in the Florentine court and up to the Risorgimento. In turn, we will recapture themes and revel in the daring that made the operas of Verdi and his contemporaries resonate with listeners.

Chris Pastore, Ph.D., Director, Master of Liberal Arts Program, University of Pennsylvania

When the curtain rose on Ulrica's cave on January 7, 1955, the audience rose to its feet to applaud Marian Anderson's Metropolitan Opera debut. That night Dimitri Mitropoulos conducted a cast including Zinka Milanov, Roberta Peters, Richard Tucker and Leonard Warren in what can be described only as the Ballo in Maschera of the 20th century.

In that tradition, ConcertOPERA Philadelphia presents this great masterpiece.

Semi-staged by Leland Kimball & Conducted by Maestro Yoonhak Baek
Accompanied by Ting Ting Wong, piano, and String Chamber Ensemble

Riccardo, the Governor of colonial Boston, and Amelia love each other but are unaware of the other's feelings. Unfortunately Amelia is the wife of Renato, Riccardo's friend and adviser. She goes to the forbidding cave of the fortune-teller Ulrica to find a cure for her illicit love and is directed to seek a magic herb that grows at the foot of the gallows. Her request is overheard by a disguised Riccardo, who meets Amelia at the deadly spot. They confess their mutual love.

Amelia veils her face as Renato approaches with warning of a plot to assassinate Riccardo. Renato, escorting the veiled Amelia, then confronts the armed conspirators. To prevent bloodshed, Amelia reveals her identity. Realizing her involvement with Riccardo, a bitter Renato resolves to join the conspiracy.

The lovers and conspirators come together at a masked ball held at the Governor's mansion. Riccardo has resolved to end the affair with Amelia, but will this prevail over Ulrica's grim prophecy of his death? Passion, suspense, spectacle, Verdi at his dramatic best.

Eric Dubin has made many significant debuts in his young career earning the baritone critical acclaim. Of a summer 2009 performance as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Opera News said, "Eric Dubin's impressive Enrico displayed an ardent, youthful baritone that nearly turned "Cruda, funesta smania" into a sympathetic moment for his character." The Philadelphia Inquirer agreed stating, "The role of Enrico, Lucia's coldhearted brother, was sung by baritone Eric Dubin, whose sonorous voice and authoritative presence were well-suited to the part."

Recently, Mr. Dubin debuted at Fresno Grand Opera as Marullo in Rigoletto, and Opera Cleveland as Silvio in I Pagliacci, returned to Nashville Opera as Roucher/Fléville in Andrea Chenier, and returned to Opera New Jersey as Valentin in Faust.
