Celebration of Lila Kitaeff's Time at Reel Grrls 2004-2012
Dear Community, It is with mixed emotions that I write to tell you I'll be leaving Reel Grrls this month for a job at KUOW's youth media program, Radio Active. I have been a part of Reel Grrls since 2004. This organization has been my passion, my community and a source of great joy and energy. Reel Grrls changed the course of my life and helped me realize my love of technology, skill sharing, media justice and youth empowerment. I have learned so much at this organization in the last eight years. We have grown up together, and it is thanks in no small part to Reel Grrls that I am the person that I am today. I want to offer my deep gratitude to each one of you that has been a part of my time at Reel Grrls. This community of youth, alumnae, parents, mentors, instructors, staff, board, partners and supporters has become my family. I love you guys! Fortunately I'm not going far away. I'm thrilled that I will still be working in the youth media field here in Seattle, and that I will have the opportunity to help many more young people find their voice in the media through my work at KUOW. I'm also grateful that, with this move, I won't have to leave my Reel Grrls family behind. I'm looking forward to continuing to make movies with the award-winning filmmaking collective that grew out of the ranks of Reel Grrls staff and mentors. I know I will find ways to support RG's program and technology needs. And I'm particularly excited about returning to theincredibly fulfilling role of a Reel Grrls mentor, which is what started me on this path in the first place. The amazing feeling of guiding a young grrl to think about the media they consume for the first time, of teaching them professional technology in a safe and nurturing space, of helping them to get their story down on paper and then onto the big screen, and the pride of watching them show that film to the world and knowing that I helped to facilitate this remarkable experience: this is the magic that is Reel Grrls, and it will always be a part of me. Thank you again for participating in my Reel Grrls community. Let's stay in touch. Lila Kitaeff
