MANAGEMENT OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES IN CONCUSSION REHABILITATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION

It is estimated that more than 2 million concussions are reported each year in the United States. Research indicates that most people who sustain a concussion, otherwise known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), fully return to their prior level of function without residual symptoms. However, up to 10 percent of this population endure persistent psychological, physical, or neurological symptoms, that significantly impede their daily function. Medical management of these persistent postconcussive symptoms is most effective when it is interdisciplinary, involving specialists in the fields of rehabilitation medicine, neurology, neuropsychology, and health psychology, to name a few.

The Sinai Rehabilitation Center one-day course brings together an interdisciplinary team of presenters who have developed strategies to address the psychological and psychiatric needs of this complex patient population. Attendees will be guided by expert tips and knowledge to maximize treatment, improve outcomes, and facilitate patients successful return to their prior levels of function.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
  1. Identify the necessary components of comprehensive medical assessment for patients diagnosed with concussion.
  2. Describe the appropriate use and benefits of neuropsychology in concussion recovery.
  3. Recognize psychiatric manifestations and identify appropriate interventions after concussion.
  4. Apply evidenced-based treatment strategies for managing the psychological effects and behaviors after concussion.
  5. Describe the role of case management in facilitating positive outcomes after concussion.
  6. Identify potential members of the interdisciplinary team in concussion rehabilitation.
