SHAKESPEARE'S R&J, an adaptation by Joe Calarco
Four young male prep students, bored and tired of conjugating Latin and other tedious school routines, decide to bring variety into their governed lives.

After school, one of the students opens a copy of William Shakespeare's ROMEO & JULIET. As the boys each take turns reading it aloud, they become swept away with the Bard's story and words. They soon break school rules by continuing their readings at every opportunity.

They discover the rigidity of their lives parallel those of the play's characters. Family roles, society's roles, and the roles played by men and women, soon make all the sense in the world to them, or no sense at all.

Two of the students soon emerge, exclusively playing the roles of Romeo and Juliet, and bring a striking new dimension to the readings.

Perceptions and understanding are suddenly turned upside down, as play-acting fun becomes very serious, and the words and meanings begin to hit home, and universal truths emerge.
