New York Citys Cabaret Legend, International cabaret and concert performer Steve Ross, is bringing his sophisticated touch, delicious sense of humor and heartfelt ballads together for this program.
As a major proponent of the international Songbook, Ross offers an eclectic program comprised of songs by the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Noel Coward, with a special nod to the incomparable Fred Astaire.

A WORD FROM LOCAL CABARET SINGER AND COACH BARBARA BRUSSELL:
The "Crown Prince of New York Cabaret" -- that's what the The New York Times called Steve Ross some 20 years ago. He hasn't lost his title yet. In fact, the only change today would be dropping "New York", for in the past decade, Steve Ross has performed around the country and around the world, in every kind of venue, from cabarets, to theaters, to Carnegie Hall, to the Cabaret Convention.
Steve Ross is a pianist, singer, unique song interpreter, and "Keeper of the Great International Songbook. He will be making his Carmel debut at The Cherry Center for the Arts. Since, 2016, it has been a goal of Cabaret-by-the-Sea to bring more Cabaret and Cabaret Artists to the Monterey Peninsula. Steve is our second New Yorker to entertain ( I shared a show with Mark Nadler in the fall of 2016), Steve Ross marks our fist official Professional Cabaret Guest Artist.
What makes this extra special for me, is that Steve was the first cabaret singer that I ever heard, on my first trip to New York City, in 1979. My mother took me to the now infamous Ted Hooks Backstage Restaurant (on 45th and 8th), where Steve was playing the piano and singing songs I had never heard, as I scribbled some titles down on napkins! Songs like, "Lucky to be Me," "Glad to Be Unhappy," "More Than You Know," "I Got it Bad and That Aint Good," to name a few. He made such an impression on me, I still remember these songs that I heard for the first time, because following day I ran to the now closed, Colony Music Store, and bought all the sheet music.
Years later, we would became friends and are now even considered colleagues!!! But, my hat is always off to him. Please do not miss out on this opportunity to hear some of the greatest songs every written, sung by one of the greatest interpreters of all time. I am most proud to introduce Steve Ross to you here on the Monterey Peninsula.

MORE ABOUT STEVE ROSS:
Steve Ross has been a fixture of the cabaret community in Manhattan for over forty years. He was born forty-five minutes from Broadway in New Rochelle, NY. He was raised in Washington, DC with an opera-loving father and a mother who played songs on their piano of Gershwin, Porter and Irving Berlin. His first major job in New York was as a successful singer/pianist at Ted Hooks Backstage.
In 1981 he re-opened at the legendary Oak Room in Manhattans famed Hotel Algonquin where he held forth for three years. He appeared on Broadway in Noel Cowards Present Laughter and off-Broadway in his tribute to Fred Astaire entitled I Wont Dance. He has performed Internationally in London, Paris, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Melbourne and Sydney, as well as in cabarets and theatres across America and on the high seas. He has hosted programs for BBC and APR (American Public Radio) . He was listed on the lecture / performance roster of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for eight years. His final show for the sadly departed Oak Room in the Algonquin in New York City, Puttin' on the Ritz - The Songs of Fred Astaire, prompted Stephen Holden of the New York Times to describe Steve as the personification of the bygone dream world that his music summons.
