A Story and A Song, a dance theater by Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda
Concept and Script: S.M. Raju and Aparna Sindhoor
Choreography: Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda
A Story and A Song: A tale of women, environment and love told with wit and dynamic interplay of classical dance (Bharatanatyam), martial arts (Kalari ppayattu), yoga, aerial dance, theater and music. An Indian folktale of a woman who can become a flowering tree forms the central theme of the show, exploring the beauty of nature, love and compassion. South Indian stories from A. K. Ramanujans translation of folktales and Native American tales by Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz, local tales and songs by grandmothers, parents, friends and family inspired the creation of A Story and A Song. Aparna Sindhoor is indebted to her father Prof. Balasubramanyam for the treasure of songs and to her mother Dr. Srivalli for telling stories with an alternate perspective. The performance encompasses live singing, spoken word, aerial dance, theater and contact improvisation in a powerful way that has mesmerized audiences. Critics in India and North America have called Sindhoor and Natyavedas choreography for A Story and A Song: breath taking! and tantalizing.
Navarasa Dance Theater is a pioneering South-Asian Contemporary Dance Theater company with a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary works inspired by Bharatanatyam and folk dance forms, martial arts (Kalarippayattu), diverse theater and music traditions, aerial dance, yoga and storytelling.
Artistic Director Aparna Sindhoor and Co-Directors Anil Natyaveda and S M Raju have created various programs to develop the performing arts as a source of inspiration for society and as a means of expression. They believe that art is an integral part of every persons life, not just a pastime of the privileged. Art is a necessity for all. Navarasa Dance Theater believes in promoting art to people all over the world as a way of communicating and building community.
"I have never seen anything quite like Aparna Sindhoor's company, Navarasa Dance Theatre, in action. There is not only a fusing of dance and theatre, here, but even within the different arts an explosive fusion of cultures. The dance is definitely rooted in the traditional, but they have incorporated into the movement elements from occidental modern dance (thereis a stunning pas de deux that would be at home with Alvin Ailey's company) and even more eclectic suggestions than that."
