Lou Caputo's NOT SO BIG BAND in Concert
Lou Caputo's NOT SO BIG BAND is a very unique and exciting musical group. The "Not So Big Band" is the brainchild of talented multi-instrumentalist Lou Caputo. It is an attempt to join the spontaneity of free-blown small group jazz with the power and gravity of a big band. It consist of twelve musicians as opposed to the sixteen-piece or larger variety. Unlike many bands, this band is a working band, and his been together for more than 6 years. Its varied musical library attempts to cover a wide range of styles that still fall into the category of modern jazz.
The group is fortunate enough to enlist the talents of some of New York's finest and in some case most celebrated jazz musical personalities. And personalities are an important part of the NSBB as they are well represented in the group. I can't think of any two people who have more personal sounds then John Eckert and Howard Johnson on their instruments. VirginiaMayhew  and Dave Smith are two of the most interesting and original soloist around NY as we speak. Geoffrey Burke is a most adaptable young saxophonist Joel Perry's ability to invoke the blues tradition yet operate in a traditional jazz context is a big asset.
We embrace a wide spectrum of approaches as our Cd can attest to. If you have been around New York City for as long as some of us have you know that there are a lot of musical styles and genre's that you can be exposed to so it's inevitable that they make an impression on you. Hopefully we are successful in present a portrait of that eclecticism Thanks to our rhythm section we can easily slide from one groove to another. Bill Crow needs no introduction and anyone who's  played with Rudy Petchourea knows about  his versatility  our percussionist Eddie Montalvo is a Grammy award winner for his work with Rubin Blades. Special mention should go out to pianist Don Stein who not only plays piano with us but also has added some fine arrangements to the band's library Along with the fine instrumentalist the band can boast of two fabulous vocalist, David Coss and Jann Parker who add so much to  a typical set by the NSBB.
