Forgotten Chicago Bridgeport Walking Tour
Sorry, this tour is sold out.
Join Forgotten Chicago for an exclusive walking tour of Bridgeport, one of Chicago's oldest, most historic, but least understood neighborhoods.
Venturing far beyond the familiar, this tour will explore lesser-known, but no less important, areas of this fascinating community. Currently one of Chicago's most diverse neighborhoods, Bridgeport is changing faster now than perhaps any time in its 170-year history.
This tour will feature insightful commentary from Maureen Sullivan and Dan Pogorzelski, co-authors of the new book, Images Of America: Bridgeport from Arcadia Publishing, published in August 2012.
A veritable breeding ground of political power in the twentieth century, no tour of Bridgeport would be complete without discussing the history and stomping grounds of Richards J. and M. We'll also visit one of the strangest (and still very much intact) physical reminders of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Of course, not all of Bridgeport's powerful politicians were named Daley; the neighborhoods numerous other political leaders will also be discussed.
Widely considered an insular Irish enclave, we will delve into a more nuanced consideration of the area's ethnic composition. As always, there are other points of interest in store: Bridgeport is home to two of the three shortest streets in the city, and includes the site of the first stone quarry in Chicago.
This tour will also explore Bridgeport's lesser known industrial past and present. We will examine numerous examples of pre-zoning industrial development on this tour, and we will also discuss a born-in-Bridgeport solution to this unzoned development; the tour will discuss the nation's first industrial park, the Central Manufacturing District.
