Small Bites Big Sips - Beer v Wine
Cooking by the Book
New York, NY

In this Small Bites Big Sips class you will renew the long standing "debate" over the best tasting beverage.  Have you ever asked the question: why is it that beer is most men's first choice in beverages, while a nice glass of wine is often a woman's' first choice. Join our Sommeliers Samuel Merritt (beer) and Harriet Lembeck (wine) as they bring their expert perspectives to the ageless debate. Here's to these long toasted differences.

Discussion will also include understanding the basic "tasting" of beer and of wine, how age, location, and process makes these amber's to roses so good to everyone, yet so different.  No beer or wine is complete without the perfect menu to complement each cup. You can be the judge of what you prefer or, you can remain happily undecided. Either way, you will have a delicious, palate pleasing experience.

Our Wine Expert - Harriet Lembeck is a noted wine and spirits educator and writer. She is President of the Wine & Spirits Program, and is the former Wine Director for The New School University. Many of her students are today's industry leaders.

She has written the 6th and 7th editions of the famed reference Grossman's Guide to Wines, Beers, and Spirits, has been a contributing editor to Wine & Spirits Magazine, and is presently a columnist for Beverage Dynamics Magazine.  She is also a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Wine.  She is Chairman of the NY Wine Press, and is a member of the North American Advisory Board for the Institute of Masters of Wine. She often appears on TV and radio, and frequently judges at wine and spirits competitions.

Our Beer Expert - Samuel Merritt is founder of Civilization of Beer and is New York's first Certified Cicerone beer sommelier.  Samuel sold specialty beer in New York from 1996 to 2006 for the Craft Brewers Guild and the Brooklyn Brewery. After researching the availability of professional beer education for beer sellers in the U.S., he founded Civilization of Beer consulting company, with the goal of closing the gap between beer studies and wine studies in the professional culinary community and returning beer to its proper place at the American table. Samuel is one of 350 Certified Cicerone  Beer Sommeliers in the US and the first in New York City. He travels the country training sales forces, consulting for brands, and speaking at public and private events while thoroughly enjoying beer, beer people, and beer culture along the way. He lives in Tivoli, NY with his wife Emily and young daughter Molly.
