Annual Holiday Concert featuring Raul Midó;n
North Star Fund, one of New York City's leading community foundations for supporting cutting-edge grassroots activism, is proud to host Raul Midón at its third Annual Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 14, 2005.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the North Star Fund, now in our 26th year of funding community groups in the five boroughs of New York City. By organizing donors, raising money for grants, and providing technical assistance, we seek to support activism that addresses both the root causes and the visible manifestations of poverty, raqcism, homophobia and gender discrimination. Since our founding in 1979, North Star Fund has distributed over $23.5 million to 1,500 groups working to ensure a more equitable and democratic city for all New Yorkers.
The Washington Post says Raul Midón is "...a febrile amalgam of Stevie Wonder vocals, feel-good pop songwriting, sophisticated jazz harmonies, and a ferociously aggressive way of playing acoustic guitar."
The New Mexico-born, New York-based Midón recently made his recording debut with STATE OF MIND, a 13-track collection of original songs that is a remarkable blend of soul, R&B, pop, folk, jazz and Latin.
"I like to celebrate the possible, the highest, the best of possibilities for human beings," says Midón, who has been blind since birth and is the son of an African American mother and an Argentinean father. "It's easy to be pessimistic given the state of the world. But I'm inspired by people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi who had the ability to transform. Collectively we create an enormously powerful force that can change the world and overcome any obstacle."
