Bach Festival 2013: Matthew Glandorf: Bach and The Art of Improvisation
Much of the published music of Bach originated in his extravagant skill at improvisation, and much of his improvisation was based on the need for music in church services for which he was organist. In the same way today, Artistic Director Matt Glandorf, in his role as organist of Saint Mark's Church and of others in Center City Philadelphia over the past twenty-five years, has developed a remarkable ability to improvise on free themes as well as on hymn-tunes used in the liturgy. As a 2013 Festival preview event, Matt will perform an entirely improvisational organ recital. Taking Bach chorales as his starting point, he will move through various periods of music history, improvising in styles ranging from the Baroque through the Romantic and Modern eras. Matt and his stunning improvisations were featured in standing-room only recitals at the 2010 AGO Convention in Washington, DC . . . join us for this one of a kind performance here in his "home" church of Saint Mark's, on its spectacular Aeolian-Skinner organ!
