THE SPIRIT OF HOUSE OF PRIME RIB
In the early 1900s, Two Bridges was a quiet neighborhood tucked between the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. But as soon as summer turned to fall, a local standby at 171 East Broadway would fill with customers hungry for red meat, carnivorous from the newly crisp air. Across from Seward Park, amidst the fall leaves, there stood a glowing pink awning, a beacon beckoning locals to sate themselves at Mission House of Prime Rib.
The seductive smell of smoked prime rib, butter, and jazz enticed people to come back night after night. Betwixt ice cold martinis and smoky saxophone tunes, diners devoured rack after rack of succulent rib, alongside silky creamed spinach and pommes purée. Glasses would clink to good health under crystal chandeliers, Mylar, and a perfect day-blue sky ceiling mural, framed and gilded. Mission House of Prime Rib was New York opulence.
On one particularly raucous Halloween night in 1962, a cigar smoker moving onto a new Cuban and flimsy off of too many green chartreuse and sodas attempted a fire breathing performance that engulfed a red velvet curtain in flames. That single act burned the entire restaurant to the ground, along with many of its beloved locals and regulars. The tragic loss of the beloved institution has been mourned since.
On Sunday, October 30, 2016 join us in celebrating those lives lost and the spirit of Mission House of Prime Rib for one night. Relive the decadence of this tragic and treasured New York establishment over 6 hour smoked prime rib finished in our wood oven, crudités on ice, and punch fountains.
