"Jesse - the original musical melodrama"
Lockwood Theater Company's signature production, "JESSE - the original musical melodrama", is Northfield's treasured musical retelling of the story of notorious train and bank robber, Jesse James.
A high-spirited good time for audience and cast alike, this exuberant and engaging family-friendly musical is filled with great songs and dialogue that trace Jesse's life with his beloved wife, Zee, including the famed Northfield Bank Raid.
Performed in a 19th century theater building and acted in the style of turn-of-the-century music hall melodramas, the audience is strongly encouraged nay, required! to loudly cheer the heroes and hiss at the villains as the story unfolds through comedy and, of course, tragedy. The show also features olios; musical entertainment pieces performed either between scenes or as an afterpiece to relieve the tension created by the melodrama and its serious storyline.
The show was written by Minnesota theater legends Robert (Bob) and Marion (Maggie) Moulton. The clever and engaging lyrics were written by Vern Sutton, well-known as a writer/performer on public radio's Prairie Home Companion. The melody lines for the songs were composed by William Huckaby, at that time Music Director of Western Opera Theater, the touring company of the San Francisco Opera. The orchestration of the entire show and underscoring was fully realized by St. Olaf College music instructor, Donna Paulson.
