Opening on Broadway in 1936, this hilarious screwball comedy, with its universal themes of the whole world is family and riches don't buy happiness, provided a joyful balm to a country still in the midst of the Great Depression. The play revolves around the engagement of wealthy Tony Kirby and working class Alice Sycamore and the meeting of their families: Tony's uptight parents and Alice's free-spirited family.
