What a double bill this is!
Galen Fraser is from Scottish fiddling royalty being the son of famed Alasdair Fraser. Galen is himself an accomplished fiddler and composer with a love for improvisation, collaboration and spontaneity. His music combines the cultures of his upbringing, American/Scottish, with a love for pop and rock n roll resulting in exciting and unique modern Celtic music. Now Based in Boston, he plays with the high energy Galen Fraser Quartet and the groovy afro-celtic funk band, Soulsha. See below for a great sampling of his playing
The other half of this extraordinary double-bill will be the truly innovative harp and fiddle duo of Mairi Chaimbeul and Jenna Moynihan. Màiri, from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, and Jenna, from Lakewood, NY, combine to make contemporary music rooted in the melodies of Scotland and Appalachia. The pair met in 2012 whilst studying at Berklee College of Music and are a product of the thriving and rich Boston music community. Jenna and Màiri have both been heavily steeped in tradition, but their music breathes new life into old tunes and merges their wide-ranging influences into a sound that is at once grounded and adventurous. The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world. It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
