Dialogo Series and #iamplanning Present: Investment without Displacement: The Complexities of Planning in Diverse Communities
EVENT: Dialogo Series and #iamplanning Present: Investment without Displacement: The Complexities of Planning in Diverse Communities

Event Organizers and Sponsors: APA Los Angeles, Young Emerging Planners, Latinos and Planning and the Urban Rising Group

How do we achieve development without displacement?  We all want better neighborhoods and amenities without being displaced. As development and investment spreads throughout the City of Los Angeles, current housing and economic conditions have impacted communities throughout the City of Los Angeles.  As stakeholders in South Los Angeles begin to see the development in their communities, the urgency of these matters has prompted community members, planners and activists to organize and collectively seek solutions, resources and tools to the impacts of gentrification.

The purpose of the panel /workshop is to continue the discussion on the following three important topics in relation to gentrification and the South Los Angeles Community:  Housing, Transportation Policy, and Economic Development; and provide community planners, members and activists with tools to combat gentrification and other impacts of economic injustice in South Los Angeles.  Other topics to be discussed include access to capital, homeownership, commercial real estate, renters rights, sense of ownership, and community collectiveness.

The panel will be comprised of the following experts:

Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Council District 8
Cynthia Strathmann PhD- Executive Director, SAJE
Claudia Monterrosa - Director,  Public Policy & Research, Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department
Lakisha Hull - Planner, Department of City Planning, City of Los Angeles
