Monopoly!

Capitol Hill Arts Center Showroom
Seattle, WA

Created and Performed by Mike Daisey
Directed by Jean-Michele Gregory

In this devastating monologue about monopoly and its discontents, Mike Daisey explores the warped genius of inventor Nikola Tesla and his war with Thomas Edison over electricity (alternating current versus direct current battle) that etched itself into the streets of New York City and the hidden alleys of American history. Electrocuted elephants, the secret history of the board game Monopoly, Microsoft's antitrust lawsuit, and ultimately the story of Daisey's hometown and its one remaining retailer: Wal-Mart. The master storyteller weaves a breathtaking number of threads into one illuminating monologue that explores the choices and struggles that individuals face when living in a system that recognizes only profit and loss.

ABOUT MIKE DAISEY:
The master storyteller...one of the finest solo performers of his generation.
NEW YORK TIMES

Daisey is a brainy, manic hoot, a cross between Noam Chomsky and Jack Black.
SEATTLE TIMES

A charismatic performer, his shows have the insightful hostility of the best comedy.
THE NEW YORKER

Daisey's skill is that he is able to talk about the historical and make it human, the personal and make it universal, so that the listener is both informed and transformed.
PAPER MAGAZINE

Sharp-witted, passionately delivered talk about matters both small and huge, at once utterly individual and achingly universal.
BOSTON GLOBE

What distinguishes him from most solo performers is how elegantly he blends personal stories, historical digressions and philosophical ruminations. He has the curiosity of a
highly literate dilettante and a preoccupation with alternative histories, secrets large and small, and the fuzzy line where truth and fiction blur. Mr. Daisey's greatest subject is himself.
NEW YORK TIMES

PRESS ABOUT MONOPOLY!:
Relentlessly interesting, brilliantly spun narrative. His show is ultimately about the messy and often unjust process of making official history. He fights back the best way he
Knows how: by telling even better stories.
NEW YORK TIMES

Precisely aimed wit and with a marvelously understated irony.
FINANCIAL TIMES OF LONDON

An electrifying night in the theater.
BOSTON GLOBE

Comic and subversive.
TIME OUT NEW YORK

Brilliant...the menace of corporate America.
Spoleto Festival Overview Critic Joshua Rosenblum,
POST AND COURIER

True to his form as an absolute master storyteller.
CHARLESTON CITY PAPER

You'll laugh harder than you have in a long time.
