"James Sugg thoroughly blurs the line between theater and rock in The Sea, with raunchy, rousing Neutral Milk/Radiohead rock songs and moody, mysterious monologues... it's a captivating place to get stranded." - Patrick Rapa, Music Editor, Philadelphia City Paper

Artistic Director and 5-time Barrymore Award winner James Sugg draws inspiration from the classical song cycle, with a series of compositions ranging in style from raucous shanty to tender lull-a-bye, all telling the life story of one Captain Owen Chase. The sea has filled the dreams of Captain Chase since he first watched the tall ships sail from his hometown bay. Today, some 50 years later, Captain Chase is a possessed man riding into the storm in search of his lost mermaid daughter. Accompany Captain Chase on his final voyage, feel the fevered sea beneath you and finally plunge beneath the waves and come face to face with your own murky mortality.

The Sea is made possible by the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative, Swarthmore College, and the Independence Foundation.

Writer/Performer: James Sugg
Designer/Director: Lars Jan
With text from Conrad, Melville and others

The band: Joshua Delpech-Ramey (drums), Andrew Nelson (bass), Christopher Colucci (guitar), and Victor Fiorillo (keyboards).
