SOCA Historic Home Tour 2012
On Sunday, September 16, the Sacramento Old City Association (SOCA) presents its 37th annual tour of historic homes in Sacramento's central city. Each year, we offer an inside look into the beautiful and historic buildings that line Midtown and Downtown streets, and some of the newest infill development projects in the city. This year's tour of the Poverty Ridge neighborhood, in the southern part of the central city between 19th and 24th, R and W Street, features homes in the Queen Anne, Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Classical Revival styles, and new infill housing.

The tour starts at the corner of 22nd and U Street. A street fair along 22nd Street features local contractors and artisans specializing in historic home rehab and remodeling, local businesses, artists and crafters displaying their wares, local nonprofits, advocacy and history organizations. Local musicians will perform at the street fair, next to the historic Ella K. McClatchy Library an 22nd Street, one of the buildings featured on the tour.

This year's musical performers are the Freebadge Serenaders, Parie Wood, Autumn Sky and Garage Jazz Architects, performing between 11 AM and 3 PM.

The tour costs $25 on the day of the event, or $20 in advance via this website. The street fair is free.

Started in 1975, the SOCA Home Tour was created to showcase historic homes in neglected central city neighborhoods. Members showed off their home-repair projects and shared techniques, tools and advice.  As these neighborhoods became the region's favorite destination for culture and entertainment, the home tour has grown into a celebration of central city life, including art, culture, business, entertainment, history, downtown living, and the irreplaceable beauty of Sacramento's historic neighborhoods. The tour is also a fundraiser that helps SOCA carry out its mission to preserve and enhance a high quality of life for Central City residents, businesses, working people and visitors.

If you pre-purchased your tickets online or at one of the brick and mortar locations, go the the will call area of the ticket booth at 22nd and U Street to pick up your wristband (admission to the homes) and tour book that provide photos and detailed information about each of the buildings on the 2012 tour.

Look for the Sacramento Old City Association banner and green tablecloth. Check in at the ticket booth and a volunteer will give you a wristband and guidebook. The guidebook has the addresses of all the homes (within a 2-3 block walk) and the wristband gets you in the door. Tour the neighborhood at your own pace!

There is no parking enforcement on Sundays in the Poverty Ridge neighborhood, but street parking is very limited. California's Department of Motor Vehicles has a parking lot nearby, Lot J, between 23rd, 24th, W and X Street, beneath Highway 50. This lot is unattended on Sunday but accessible for public use. This lot is about three blocks from the street fair and ticket booth.
