Urinetown The Musical
Members of the SHS Performing Arts program will present a special preview Saturday, June 2 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm in the newly renovated SHS Auditorium of URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL, the show they will be taking to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, this hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL, was nominated for seven Tony awards, winning for Best Book and Best Original Score in 2002. Summit is one of only 40 high school theatre programs in the country selected by the American High School Theatre Festival to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest performing arts festival in the world. Each August Edinburgh, Scotland becomes the most magical and exciting place on earth as over 100,000 artists from all over the world take part in the Fringe. The Fringe includes over 2,000 different performances of music, dance, theatre, and comedy during its three-week run. Under the direction of Anne Poyner and Wayne Mallette, thirty-one SHS musical theatre students will be experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime trip July 31-August 13. In addition to ten days of performing and touring in Edinburgh , the students will spend two days at Stratford-on-Avon where they will attend an acting workshop and a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
