"Custer's Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America"

Join two Pulitzer Prize winners, T. J. Stiles and David M. Kennedy, for a discussion of General George Armstrong Custer that will radically change your view of the man and his turbulent times.

In Custer's Trials, T. J. Stiles magisterial new biography, Stiles paints a portrait of Custer both deeply personal and sweeping in scope, proving how much of Custer's legacy has been ignored in favor of a historical caricature.  

Stiles reveals a Custer who is volatile, contradictory, intense - capable yet insecure, intelligent yet bigoted, passionate yet self-destructive, and a romantic individualist at odds with the institution of the military (he was court-martialed twice in six years).  

T. J. Stiles is the author of the "First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt", winner of the Pulitzer Prize and "Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War". A member of the Society of american Historians and a former Guggenheim fellow, he live sin Berkeley, California.

David M. Kennedy is Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus at Stanford University and co-director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West. "Freedom From Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929-1945", won the Pulitzer Prize for History. He is the author of "Over Here: The First World War and American Society", which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and "Birth Control in America: The Career of Margaret Sanger".
