A Doubter's Almanac
Come help us celebrate a former heavyweight of the Bay Area literary scene and one of the best writer's of our time, Ethan Canin. The author of numerous New York Times bestsellers and a current member of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Ethan will be interviewed by Anthony Marra, Stanford creative writing instructor, former Stegner fellow, and Ethan's own former student at the Iowa Writer's Workshop about Ethan's new novel, The Doubter's Alamanac.
After graduating with a degree in English from Stanford University, Ethan earned his MFA, but realized is would be difficult to earn a living as a writer, so he decided to become a doctor. Halfway through his residency, Canin left medicine and returned to writing, founding the San Francisco Writers Grotto, now a thriving community of writers, journalists, and filmmakers.
"I've been reading Ethan Canin's books since he first burst on the literary scene with the remarkable Emperor of the Air. I thought he could never equal the power of his last work, America America, but his latest novel is, I believe, his best by far. With A DOUBTER'S ALAMANAC, Canin has soared to a new standard of achievement. What a story, and what a cast of characters. The protagonist Milo Andret is a mathematical genius and one of the most maddening, compelling, appalling and unforgettable characters I've encountered in American fiction. This is the story of a family that falls to pieces under the pressure of living with an abundantly gifted tyrant. Ethan Canin writes about mathematics as brilliantly as T.S. Eliot writes about poetry. With this extraordinary novel, Ethan Canin now takes his place on the high wire with the best writers of his time."Pat Conroy, #1 Bestselling Author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini
Anthony Marra is the winner of a Whiting Award, Pushcart Prize, and the Narrative Prize. A Constellation of Vital Phenomena won the National Book Critics Circle's inaugural John Leonard Prize and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in fiction, as well as the inaugural Carla Furstenberg Cohen Fiction Award. He received an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford, where he is the Jones Lecturer in Fiction. His newest book is The Tsar of Love and Techno, a truly fantastic read.
