Black Child Development Institute (BCDI) & PRAXIS Spring Conference
BCDI & PRAXIS Institute for Early Childhood Education proudly presents our yearly Spring Conference entitled Enhancing Our Cultural Competency: Keeping African American Childrn Alive, Free & Thriving! The conference has three main tracks it will address which are education, early childhood & juvenile justice. These are workshops that will be offered throughout the day from 10:00 am - 11:30 am & repeating again from 11:45 am - 1:15 pm. These workshops feature various leaders & organizations in the community who have a proven track record in working successfully with African American families & children! The plenary speaker will be Dr. Caprice Hollins, co-founder of Cultural Connections, LLC, past Director of Equity & Race Relations at Seattle Public Schools and is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology.
The luncheon speaker will be one of the leading national experts on the study of cross-cultural management & cultural diveristy, Dr.Edwin Nichols! Dr. Nichols is a clinical/industrial psychologist & as the Director of Nichols & Associates, he researches on the philosophical aspects of cultural difference & consults on diversity through the United States & abroad!

Dr. Caprice Hollins, is the co-founder of Cultural Connections, LLC and is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. She has over 15 years experience addressing issues of race & social justice including her work as the past Director of Equity & Race Relations at Seattle Public Schools and Assistant Professor of Counseling at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology.

BCDI/PRAXIS Conference Workshops
-JUVENILE JUSTICE TRACK WORKSHOPS-
Youth Violence Prevention - BCDI's Neighborhood by Neighborhood Initiative (2nd session only) A youth violence prevention strategy using a social media/You tube outreach approach. In this workshop, participants will hear updates about the BCDI Neighborhood by Neighborhood Initiative, which uses the Omega Boys Club Alive & Free Prescription & learn how social media is being used to engage youth. Several participants will be selected to co-star in our next YouTube video & receive a personal copy of the DVD.

Policing, Policy and Parenting If the police stop you, do you know your rights? What if the police try to search you when you in your car? What if the police knock on your door & ask to enter your apartment or home? Do you know what to? This interactive workshop will provide strategies for participants to protect themselves & their families. Since 1990, Mothers for Police Accountability has worked to eliminate police violence & misconduct & is committed to supporting the victims of police violence.

Mental Illness & Drug Addiction Prevention, Recognition & Recovery Can you "know" if your child/student is experimenting with Nicotine, Alcohol, Marijuana or other drugs? What are the warning signs of Depression or Anxiety? Can you find the best care for a loved one claimed by drugs or mental issues? For yourself? When is a diagnosis a label you should fight? What parent/guardian/teacher actions foster Behavioral Health & Resilience in children of African descent? Come & learn how to navigate & advocate for your students, yourself, and your loved ones.

-EDUCATION TRACK WORKSHOPS-
Academic English: Unlocking Codes of Power (1st session only) What is Academic English? Where does it come from? How do you help children access it? In this workshop, discuss & learn how to help our children, ourselves & Academic English to the collection of communication styles we use - without eliminating, replacing, or minimizing home & community communication styles. We will examine what it takes to increase the ability to read, write & speak Academic English & examine its power dynamics.

Linking the Past to the Present: The American History Traveling Museum: The Unspoken Truths - A Teaching Tool The workshop will consist of a pedagogy utilizing authentic artifacts, story boards & oral interpretation (storytelling). The exhibit is a rare glimpse of history seldom seen or discussed in the history books. The exhibit is a way for learners of all ages to experience the brutal "truths" about our past & an opportunity to take pride in the contributions of both Africans in Africa, as well as African Americans in the U.S. Participants will view the exhibit & hear suggested methods of incorporating the information into class curriculums & for learning opportunities in home. Cultural Matters: Building Language & Literacy Skills Participants will have an opportunity to enagage in fun learning expereinces, practices & activities that enhance the language & literacy skills of Pre-K to 2nd grade children, especially African American children. The workshop is both informative & interactive! Activities will include analyzing books for racism & biases & other useful information & resources.

-EARLY CHILDHOOD TRACK WORKSHOPS- Culturally Relevant Anti-Bias Practices (birth - 8 years) Join this opportunity for discussion of what Culturally Relevant & Anti-Bias Practice looks like in action. Participants will enagage in activities that support the development of implementation strategies that are honest, reflective & "doable" in their work with children & families.
