Event
The Music fo Weill and Mahler
The Metro Chamber Orchestra continues its Ninth Season on March 24, 2012 at 8 PM. For the past four seasons Una Tone has been concertmaster of the MCO and on March 24th she takes her turn as soloist in the rarely performed Twentieth Century masterpiece the Violin Concerto by Kurt Weill. The Violin Concerto echoes the decadent time of the Weimar Republic in Germany between World Wars. Angular rhythms and lyrical atonality highlight the piece which clearly has Weill's musical signature on it. Uniquely scored for just wind band and soloist, this virtuoso work paints an uneasy picture of an uneasy time. Ms Tone will bring all her fire, passion and technical brilliance to this most challenging work.
The NY debut of the Klaus Simon's arrangement of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D (Titan) completes the program. Since the Schoenberg arrangement for chamber ensemble of the Mahler Fourth Symphony arrangers have toyed with reducing these mammoth works; some with greater success than others. Mr. Simon has captured the contrapuntal aspects of this great score yet still manages to bring the necessary climaxes to bear when necessary. Philip Nuzzo, the MCO Artistic Director leads this exciting and what should prove to be a memorable evening. The Metro Chamber Orchestra presents "The Music of Weill and Mahler" Philip Nuzzo Artistic Director, Una Tone, violin.
