Opioid Therapy in Dentistry; Reducing Risk and Maximizing Positive Outcome. Our guest lecturer is Ronald J. Kulich, Ph.D. Opioids are effective agents for the management of acute and many chronic pain conditions when prescribed appropriately and used by the patient in proper fashion. Dentists prescribe 12% of immediate release opioids, with family physicians being the only subspecialty who prescribe more. The program provides attendees with a review of current standards for the evidence-based management of patients on complex medication regimens for chronic pain. Particular focus is placed on risk stratification and management of patients on opiods. Clinically relevant assessment template for identifying patients who are at high risk for substance use disorder will be discussed. Dr. Kulich will present practical strategies for management of the complex patient with pain, including recommendation for effective referral and termination where appropriate. Dr. Kulich is an Associate Professor at the Facial Pain and Headache Center at Tufts and lecturer at Harvard Medical School at the Center for Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Massachusetts General Hospital. He directs the behavioral science curriculum for dentists in training, and teaches at Tufts School of Medicine. He has authored publications in areas including access to care, evidence-based medicine in the courts, and risk stratification for opioid therapy. He is co-author of the book, "Pain and Managed Care."
