The Dining Room
Gurney's Pulitzer-nominated The Dining Room is an eloquent look at the lives of 50 characters, whose most important life decisions centre around the dining room table. Played by six actors, in 18 vignettes, over a stretch of five decades, each interacts with that most elemental of rooms of the 19th into the 20th Century western WASP home. Though the script was written in the early 1980s, it's as if Gurney foresaw the anti-social behavior of texting and smart phones, choosing to remind us of the time when the dinner table was where conversations took place, where we apprised each other of how our day went, where we learned our manners, and where plans for our futures were made. It's also a comment on the privileged class, as servants were part of the activity, but also a symptom of a tenacious class system.
