Michael Oren - Power, Faith, and Fantasy...America in the Middle East 1776 to Present
A Houston favorite, Michael Oren always has something new to say to enlighten and challenge his audience. A historian with degrees from Princeton and Columbia, Oren has written in-depth about the Middle East. Oren is a Senior Fellow at the Shalem Center, a Jerusalem research and educational institute. His writing has appeared in publications including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE NEW REPUBLIC, COMMENTARY, and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. Raised in the United States, Oren immigrated to Israel in 1979. He served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, reaching the rank of major. Renowned for his exhaustive historical research, Oren's POWER, FAITH AND FANTASY is the first comprehensive history of America's military, political, and intellectual involvement in the Middle East from George Washington to George W. Bush. Drawing on government documents, thousands of classified papers, and the memoirs of merchants, missionaries, and travelers, as well as personal correspondence, Oren seeks to fill this gap in our collective knowledge by reconstructing the diverse and remarkable ways in which Americans have interacted with this alluring and often hostile region.
