Jonathan Wilson - Marc Chagall
Novelist and critic Jonathan Wilson gives us a fresh new look at one of the most beloved and misunderstood Jewish artists of the twentieth century, Marc Chagall. Wilson studies the influence of Hasidic mysticism, Chagall's Cubist aesthetic, and most importantly analyzes the artist's obsession with Christ and use of the Crucifixion as an "icon of Jewish suffering." Wilson reveals Chagall as a victim of anti-Semitism, who was ambivalent about his role as a Jewish artist, who adorned churches and synagogues with stained-glass windows, often choosing Christ as a symbol of martyrdom. A professor of English at Tufts University, Wilson's work has appeared in THE NEW YORKER, THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE, and BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES.
