Sophie Judah - Dropped from Heaven
Jewish Community Center Houston, TX
The warmth of Sophie Judah, an Indian-Jewish author, is evident in this debut collection of short stories that captures the spotlight of the centuries-old culture of the Bene Israel community in India. Judah presents a fascinating look at the little-known culture, and its isolation within the larger Asian-Indian factor, over the course of more than a century. Judah shares an insider's view of life in the fictional village of Jwalangar, touching on the fusion of Jewish and Indian customs and traditions, the India-Pakistan partition, and the birth of Israel. Born in India in 1949, Judah immigrated to Israel in 1973 where she now lives with her family.
