Joyce Antler - You Never Call! You Never Write!: A History of the Jewish Mother
The Merfish Center Houston, TX
The Jewish Mother--whether drawn as self-sacrificing or manipulative, in countless films, novels, radio and television programs, or stand-up comedy, appears as a colossal figure. Joyce Antler, the Samuel Lane Professor of American Jewish History and Culture at Brandeis University, traces the odyssey of one of the best-known figures in popular culture in this illuminating and often amusing history. She reminds us of a time when Jewish mothers were admired for their tenacity, but later transformed into a negative persona. Antler uncovers a new counter-narrative and notes how the Jewish Mother is continually reinvented, providing a unique lens with which to examine the vital concerns of American Jews and the culture at large. Optional lunch at 12:30 PM. $8.00 prepaid with reservation made by Oct. 30th. Call 713-729-3200, ext. 3231.
