HYSTERIA
Berkeley High S.H.I.F.T. Fall 2011
Directed by Marcelo Gutierrez. Written by Terry Johnson
In short, the play is about an aging Sigmund Freud, the end if his monstrous career and life. He encounters a young girl named Jessica. Jessica introduces herself as his female subconscious, his anima. Jessica's come to Freud to resolve some unfinished business. Later, they are interrupted by the surrealist painter Salvador Dali who's come to gain Freud's attention and admiration. Dali was eventually distracted from his main goal, of earning Freud's blessing, by Jessica. He's been mesmerized by her beauty and glorious physical features. As the show continues, Dali and Jessica begin to require more and more attention from Freud. In the meantime, Freud tries to hide and suppress these odd characters from his doctor and old friend, Yahuda. Yahuda is constantly telling Freud that he's going crazy and that if he doesn't slow down he'll end up dead and alone. Because Jessica and Dali will add on to the psychotic image Yahuda has of Freud, he tries to keep them away from Yahuda. In the process many strange and surreal events take place that lead to a mysterious ending.
