Thrillpeddlers' "Shocktoberfest!! 2007: Maker of Monsters" is a bang-up bill of classic Grand Guignol shock-shows, hot comic farce and lights-out spookshow thrills. Couples even have the option of enhancing their Shocktoberfest!! experience via The Hypnodromes signature Shock Box seats for two, now newly remolded and tricked-out with electrifying special effects.
The influence of Grand Guignol, the century-old theatrical genre of on-stage terror and taboo, is stronger than ever as Broadway, Hollywood and pop culture historians bait audiences with allusions to its bygone thrills. But a true night of Grand Guignol requires many different elements beyond its infamous bloody special effects. No theatre in the world recaptures the spirit of the original the way we do at The Hypnodrome said Russell Blackwood, Thrillpeddlers producer.
The form originated at Le Theatre du Grand Guignol in Paris, which traded on their theatres seamy Pigalle locale in a converted convent. An alternating bill of steamy sex farces and bone-chilling terror plays gave their audiences the unique thrill of a hot and cold shower theatrical experience an emotional roller coaster of terror and titillation
The trip down 10th Street to Thrillpeddlers intimate SOMA venue, quickens the pulse just like peering down the dead end alley at Le Theatre du Grand Guignol once did. Once inside the Hypnodrome, guests are immersed in the cozy and familiar environment of a classic horror theatre complete with a Victorian funeral cortege, a working life-size guillotine and a sixteen foot high Satan from a carnival spookhouse.
"Shocktoberfest!! 2007: Maker of Monsters" showcases one-act plays drawn from or inspired by the original repertoire of Le Theatre du Grand Guignol. The night begins with Google;Fetish, a series of variety acts highlighting unusual sexual compulsions (complete with the daily totals of web searchers for each fetish). Next up, The Maker of Monsters, Daniel Zilbers original English adaptation of the Grand Guignols 1929 circus sideshow shocker. Two new one-acts, Jonathan Hortons bone-chilling drama The Colossus and Rob Keefes comedy The Bloody Con, round out the bill of plays.
