You won't want to miss this literary event of the highest order.  We will be celebrating the new and collected short story collection, The Visiting Privilege, of one of the most accomplished and revered authors of our time: Joy Williams.  This is her first collection in more than ten years - and, finally, the definitive one.

Joy Williams has been celebrated as a master of the short story for four decades, her renown passing as a given from one generation to the next even in the shifting landscape of contemporary writing.  The Visiting Privilege encompasses the incredible scope: thirty-three stories drawn from three earlier collections, and another thirteen appearing here for the first time. Whether you're a long time admirer of Williams or you're new to her writing, this is a book you'll want on your shelf.  It showcases her crisp, elegant prose, her dark wit, and her uncanny ability to illuminate our world through characters and situations that feel at once peculiar and foreign and disturbingly familiar.

"Williams "has a gift for finding those significant moments that reveal the somber verities luring beneath the flash and clamor of daily life." -Michio Kakutani

"Simply a wonder... The world according to Williams is a world unlike any other in contemporary fiction." -Raymond Carver

"She belongs in the company of Celine, Flannery O'Connor, and Margaret Atwood." -James Salter

Peter Orner is the author of Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge, Love and Shame and Love, and Esther Stories.  He has a new book of literary criticism/memoir coming out next year called, Am I Alone Here. Orner is a long time permanent faculty member at San Francisco State where he is a professor.

This event is free, but please RSVP.
