Miss Representation presented by Girls Incorporated of the Island City
Miss Representation, a documentary film written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, explores how the media limits the potential of women and girls by putting out messages that their value is tied to their beauty, youth, and sexuality- not in their capacity as leaders. Consequently, these messages limit the real and perceived power of woman and girls in society, resulting in a dangerous message internalized by girls and propagated by society.
The film accumulates startling facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken, armed with a new perspective, and asking the question, "What can we do?" about the issue. Girls Inc. is part of the solution and so are YOU.
Girls Inc. is teaming up with Encinal High School to facilitate a discussion with audience members following the film. The discussion will be led by Diana Kenney, Digital Citizenship Instructor at Encinal High School, and Marilyn Sandifur, Girls Incorporated of the Island City Board Member and Port of Oakland Media and PR Specialist. Together with the support of Girls Inc.'s Blueprint group and the boys and girls leadership groups at Encinal High School, they will provide a context for community members to take action and to share their opinions.
