Sexual Perversity in Chicago
In its inaugural Albuquerque season, Chicago's own Prodigal Sons' Productions teams up with the Albuquerque Film Festival to electrify New Mexico with the 35th Anniversary of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago. The duo unites forces to bring this mixed media 1976 comedy to life at the Filling Station Theater this October. This rock star event fuses theater, film and music into a celebration of the senses never before witnessed in Albuquerque.
Straight from Chicago, director and producer Scott Schuster creates his own spin around Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago. In this intimate black box setting, the play is teaming with a nostalgic soundtrack and video clips from the mid 1970's. Perversity is designed to capture the essence of this free spirited and hedonistic decade. With a wide background in production and design, Schuster is the perfect candidate to craft this multi-textured show.
Native New Mexican Alexandra Nakelski has spent the last decade in Los Angeles studying film and working in the industry. Previously working in Santa Fe and L.A. as a film festival programmer and acquiring her Master's degree in Film Studies, she joins with Schuster to authenticate the style and chronological fidelity of the production. As co-producer, she assures that the show is not another 70s parody, but a tribute to both the best and worst of this tumultuous time in our American history.
The New York Times maintains Sexual Perversity in Chicago "takes funny and painful digs at the fantasies and distances of the contemporary sexual game, during the mid 1970's Chicago. Taking place over the course of nine weeks during the summer of 1976, two coworkers Danny and Bernie are on the make in the swinging singles scene. Danny meets Deborah and they quickly find themselves not only lovers, but cohabitants of Danny's downtown bachelor pad. Their sexual intensity flares and dies amidst the tumultuous winds of hedonism clashing against the spirit of the women's liberation movement. The play ends full circle with Danny (freshly single again) and Bernie at the local beach talking a good game.
Sexual Perversity in Chicago by David Mamet plays October 13-23 at The Filling Station Theater, 1024 4th St SW (south of Central Ave) Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $15 General Admission and $12 for Seniors and Students. For more information please visit www.prodigalsonsproductions.com.
