Eurpides' Iphigeneia in Tauris
The Leonidas Loizides Group, based in Athens, has been bringing Greek Culture to theatergoers  throughout the world in recent years.  They played in numerous venues up and down both coasts of the United States during the last three years, and they presented "The Trojan Women" in the St. Demetrios Hall in 2009. In addition to presentations in the US, every year they perform in numerous countries throughout the world, e.g. last year they performed in Chile, Mexico, several European countries, and the Emirate of Oman in the Persian Gulf.  This year, after their West Coast tour is complete, they are scheduled for a month -long run in the Lion Theatre - Theater Row, Off Broadway, in addition to all the other East Coast cities that they have been visiting every year.  In short it is something to look forward to.

At the simplest level, the story line is that Orestes,  King Agamemnon's son and his friend Pylades had traveled to far off Scythia, in the shores of the Black Sea, in order to steal the wooden image of goddess Artemis in order to carry it to Attica.  They are captured by the local "barbarians", and as robbers of temples they are to be sacrificed to the goddess that they offended.  Before the sacrifice however, they had to be purified in a ceremony in the temple of Artemis.  The priestess of Artemis, Orestes soon realizes, is his sister Iphigenia, whom their father had agreed to sacrifice to insure favorable winds so the Greek fleet might sail to Troy to avenge the abduction of Helen.  The goddess Artemis replaced Iphigenia with a doe just before the sacrifice, and Iphigenia was taken to Scythia to serve in Artemis' temple there.

After they recognized each other, and with Iphigenia's help, Orestes and Pylades escape and return to Attica with the goddess's wooden image
