TARGET IRAN with Scott Ritter
In Person: Scott Ritter, former chief weapons inspector for the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) in Iraq
Mr. Ritter will present his analysis of US policy toward Iran, followed by a Q&A, a reception and signing of his latest book, Target Iran.
As a chief weapons inspector for the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) in Iraq, Scott Ritter was on the front lines of the ongoing battle against arms proliferation. His book Endgame explored the shortcomings of American foreign policy in the Persian Gulf region and Iraq Confidential, detailed the truth of how the UN inspectors disarmed Iraq and how their efforts were undermined by the US government. Ritter took part in 52 inspection missions, 14 of them as chief inspector. Iraqi intransigence, United Nations inaction and American interference and manipulation all combined to compel Ritter to resign his position with UNSCOM in 1998, proclaiming that the illusion of arms control is more dangerous than no arms control at all.
In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Scott Ritter was one of the few public figures courageous enough to challenge the lies spread by the Bush administration and the mainstream media concerning Iraqs weapons of mass destruction. In Target Iran, Scott Ritter uncovers the patterns of influence in international security networks to provide a cool-headed analysis of Irans nuclear programme and US policy in the Middle East. He reveals the motivation behind the Bush administrations attempts to cultivate popular democracy and regime change in Iran. He explains why the United States persists in pursuing high-risk foreign policy in the Middle East, Israels involvement, and how this time it could actually lead to nuclear conflict.
Mr. Ritter was at the Cinema Arts Centre in Nov. 2002 to speak about his 8 years in Iraq as a UN weapons inspector
