THE METAMORPHOSIS as performed by the Nowy Teatr Kameralny, Warsaw 1940
This play-within-a-play, adapted by JCHS students and faculty, imagines Kafka's tale of a man transformed into "a vermin-unit for sacrifice" as performed by a Jewish theater company in the Warsaw Ghetto, Nowy Teatr Kameralny. The actors from the real-life Nowy Teatr Kameralny (NTK) performed Jewish plays and anti-fascist satires in the Ghetto despite Nazi bans. The actors - constantly shifting like the characters in Metamorphosis - fail to establish communication with others; their world erupts in grotesque incidents and violence, as they desperately search for meaning, identity, and a sense of purpose.
