When We Were Colored
It's Sacramento in 1952 and you're the first black family on your block. Come cry and laugh with the Rutlands in When We Were Colored, a play by Ginger Rutland adapted from her mother Eva's legendary memoir.
The play, like the book from which it springs, tells the story of a middle class black woman born and raised in the segregated south before World War II who moves West to raise her children in "integrated" California after the war.
In this poignant homage to her mother, former television reporter, NPR commentator and editorial writer for The Sacramento Bee, Ginger Rutland puts her family's story on stage. See the play and you will experience the joys and the anguish of integration for an ordinary black family, living in extraordinary times.
As blacks picketed and sat-in at lunch counters in the south  In the north and California they moved quietly into all white neighborhoods, joined PTAs, became team mothers at local Little Leagues, and led girl scout troops. As a black mother you didn't just worry about why Billy couldn't grasp algebra, whether Elsie had a date for the prom and how to get Ginger to eat her vegetables  but how adequate was their segregated school, and how integrated, their integrated one; can they swim in the neighborhood pool and what to do when somebody calls them n.?
