San Francisco, CA (Apr. 11, 2011) JEFFERSON STARSHIP, created by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE founder PAUL KANTNER, embarks on tour in 2011 marking 40 years since the release of their first album "Blows Against the Empire." "Blows" was the first ever rock music recording nominated for literary science fiction's prestigious Hugo Award and represented a pinnacle of collaboration for KANTNER's "AIRPLANE camp" and that of GRATEFUL DEAD, QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE and CROSBY, STILLS & NASH, all of whom are represented by performances on that halcyon recording. KANTNER returned the favor by appearing on DAVID CROSBY's first solo record and GRATEFUL DEAD drummer MICKEY HART's first solo record that same year. Such was the nature of musical collaboration in the late 1960s/ early 1970s in the 'fertile crescent' of the San Francisco Bay area.
JEFFERSON STARSHIP as a permanent touring entity followed the dissolution of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, but took up the mantle of their classic repertoire. QUICKSILVER co-founder/ GRATEFUL DEAD confederate and latter day JEFFERSON AIRPLANE singer DAVID FREIBERG joined KANTNER in the road launch of JEFFERSON STARSHIP in 1974 along with AIRPLANE vocalist GRACE SLICK. The following year, AIRPLANE co-founder MARTY BALIN re-emerged, bringing chart topping hits such as "Miracles" and "Count On Me." KANTNER left the band he founded in 1983, joining BALIN in KBC with former CROSBY lead guitarist SLICK AGUILAR, but reconnected with GRACE SLICK
for 1989's one-off JEFFERSON AIRPLANE reunion album and tour before returning to his folk roots in 1991, forming PAUL KANTNER's WOODEN SHIPS (named after the famous post-apocalyptic anthem he co-wrote with CROSBY & STILLS). Then in 1992 he reformed JEFFEFRSON STARSHIP, bringing AGUILAR and other 'JEFFERSON' family alumni aboard, going on to perform over 1,500 concerts in 21 countries with no signs of slowing down.
JEFFERSON STARSHIP co-founder DAVID FREIBERG re-joined in 2005, and with AGUILAR, drummer DONNY BALDWIN, keyboard/bassist CHRIS SMITH, formed a core of players with decades of longevity congealed around the legendary KANTNER. FREIBERG sings the band's #1 hit "Jane" which he also wrote.
Having 'discovered' GRACE SLICK in 1966 (a Bay area singer with THE GREAT SOCIETY), KANTNER demonstrated an ear and penchant for dynamic female vocalists, a key to the "JEFFERSON" sound. This was clearly evident with the addition of DARBY GOULD from WORLD ENTERTAINMENT WAR in 1992 and most notably, Grammy nominated Broadway star of "Love, Janis" CATHY RICHARDSON in 2008. Though DARBY GOULD continues to appear with the band from time to time, CATHTY RICHARDSON has ascended to be a dynamic singer and performer without comparison, reprising classics such as "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love." "She's THAT good!" exclaims KANTNER from his home in San Francisco the last of the classic era San Francisco musicians who still resides in the city. "Not only that," he adds "CATHY sings MARTY's songs as well." Though BALIN still occasionally performs with the band, he has largely retired from touring.
In 2008 JEFFERSON STARSHIP released "Jefferson's Tree of Liberty" reprising classic folk compositions of protest and social conscience. The album made many top ten critics lists that year and the band performed many shows acoustically.
In 2009 JEFFERSON STARSHIP headlined "The Heroes of Woodstock" tour the sole official commemorative of rock music's greatest single 'event' "Woodstock" reprising the set performed by JEFFERSON AIRPLANE there in 1969. Even as "The Heroes" continue to perform, JEFFERSON STARSHIP takes flight again in 2011, reprising a 40 plus year repertoire that is the soundtrack to a generation. PAUL KANTNER's music has appeared in numerous films including "Forrest Gump" and "A Serious Man" and his plans include producing, composing and touring well into the future. On June 5 the band will appear live from Nautica Pavilion, Clevelandon HDNET TV with the renowned Contemporary Youth Orchestra their first ever symphony performance.
