The Real Blackbeard
Coming on the heels of the opening of the newest Pirates of the Caribbean move, On Stranger Tides, is the anniversary of Blackbeard's most notorious exploit, the week-long blockade of Charles Towne. The blockade began on May 22, 1718. Blackbeard held the entire city hostage until he received desperately needed medicine for his crew. To mark the anniversary The Powder Magazine Museum will offer a special program on Blackbeard, made even more timely by the movie, since Blackbeard is one of the main characters.
In honor of the Blockade Anniversary, tickets are only $5!
Eric Lavender of Charleston Pirate Tours will present a 45-minute program on Blackbeard Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Powder Magazine (79 Cumberland St., Charleston). Presented in an entertaining storytelling format, the program contrasts the real Blackbeard to the Blackbeard of Hollywood. "There are a lot of misconceptions about Blackbeard, but the truth is actually more exciting that the myth," says Lavender. Lavender adds that much about Edward Thatch, aka Blackbeard, has been lost to time, which accounts for the development of so many folkloric legends.
In addition to numerous network television appearances, Eric Lavender has appeared at museums, events, and schools across the southeast.
