SATE presents One Flea Spare
SATE PRESENTS NAOMI WALLACE'S ONE FLEA SPARE: AUGUST 19-29

Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble (SATE) continues its Season of Mistaken Identity, a three-production season exploring the personas we present publicly and the one we keep to ourselves. Is our private identity the true version of ourselves, or are others perceptions of us reality?

For its second production of the Season of Mistaken Identity, SATE will produce Naomi Wallace's play One Flea Spare. A wealthy couple is preparing to flee their home in plague-ravaged 17th Century London when a mysterious sailor and a young girl sneak into their boarded up house. Now, quarantined together for 28 days, the only thing these strangers fear more than the Plague is each other. Definitions of morality are up for grabs and survival takes many forms in this dark, fiercely intense and humorous play.

One Flea Spare premiered in London at the Bush Theatre in 1995. In 1996, it received its American premiere at the Humana Festival of New American Plays. It opened in New York at The Public Theater in 1997 and won the OBIE Award for best play; it also won the 1996 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the 1996 Joseph Kesselring Prize and the 1996 Fellowship of Southern Writers Drama Award. In 2009, One Flea Spare was incorporated into the permanent répertoire of the French National Theatre, the Comédie -Francaise, and produced there in 2012. Only two American playwrights have ever been added to La Comédie's repertoire in 300 years: the other being Tennessee Williams. SATE's production of One Flea Spare will be its St. Louis premiere.

SATE presents One Flea Spare August 19-29 (Wednesdays-Saturdays), at 8:00pm, at The Chapel, 6238 Alexander Drive.

SATE's performing ensemble includes Charlie Barron, Joe Hanrahan, Andrew Kuhlman, Hannah Ryan and Kelley Weber. One Flea Spare is directed by Ellie Schwetye. Kristin Rion is the stage manager. Dramaturgy by Taylor Greunloh. Lighting design by Bess Moynihan. Costumes by Elizabeth Henning.  Sound design by Kareem Deanes.  Set design by Bess Moynihan and Ellie Schwetye.
